In commenting on his marriage a week after the ceremony, Lincoln told Samuel D. Marshall: “Nothing new here, except my marrying, which to me, is matter of profound wonder.” A newspaper in Winchester found it noteworthy that the duelist of September had become the bridegroom of November: “Linco[l]n, who was to have been flayed alive by the sword of Shields, has given up the notion of dueling, and taken up one no less fatal to bachelors than the sword is to animal existence—in short, he is married! ‘Grim visaged war hath smoothed his wrinkled front,’ and now ‘he capers nimbly in a ladys’ [chamber].”
