Matheny, “was Lincoln’s religion.” Lincoln poked fun at the doctrine of damnation by telling a story about a Methodist parson who criticized a Universalist minister: “Why, the impertinent fellow declared that all shall be saved, but, my dear Brethren, let us hope for better things.”
