Before passing this message on to his boss, the scandalized supervisor of telegraphs in the War Department, Edward S. Sanford, omitted the last two sentences. Even in its bowdlerized version, that telegram angered Stanton, who took it to Lincoln and said “with much feeling ‘You know—Mr President that all I have done was by your authority.’ ”
