But while Lincoln’s spirits were buoyed by the army’s relatively good condition, they were depressed by a long letter that McClellan handed him upon his arrival. In that remarkable document, which became known as the Harrison’s Landing letter, the general insolently and menacingly offered detailed advice about “civil and military policy, covering the whole ground of our national trouble.”
