Lincoln’s unit, the Fourth Illinois Regiment of Mounted Volunteers, part of General Samuel Whiteside’s brigade, included some Clary’s Grove boys. One of its members described the Fourth as “the hardest set of men he ever saw.” The poet William Cullen Bryant portrayed them as “a hard-looking set of men, unkempt and unshaved, wearing shirts of dark calico, and sometimes calico capotes.”
