Late 16th century borrowing from New Latin glōttis, from Ancient Greek γλωττῐ́ς (glōttĭ́s, “mouth of the windpipe”), from γλῶττᾰ (glôttă, “tongue”) +‎ -ῐς (-ĭs, feminine noun suffix). Cognates include Latin gula.
