Passing beneath the outsized portico, visitors entered a small lobby, then emerged into a large vestibule, where coat racks were set up for large public receptions. Those events were held in the enormous East Room, which William O. Stoddard said had “a faded, worn, untidy look” and needed fresh paint and new furniture. It featured a conventionally frescoed ceiling, satin drapes, a plush carpet, and three huge chandeliers.
